All-Door Boarding
The San Francisco Transit Riders Union overwhelmingly supports a pilot program to implement all-door boarding on Muni buses. All-door boarding means allowing riders to board through any door on buses when paying with their Clipper card or holding a transfer. All-door boarding makes trips quicker, saves Muni money that can be invested in improved service, and improves reliability, safety, and comfort for riders. We support an all-door boarding pilot to be in place by winter (2011/2012) on all articulated buses, such as 8X/8AX/8BX, 9, 14, 14L, 30, 38, 38L, 41, 49, and 71.

Van Ness Bus Rapid Transit
SFTRU supports better transit on Van Ness Avenue through the implementation of a bus rapid transit (BRT) line.
Today, buses on Van Ness Avenue are stuck behind traffic and stopped at red lights. This causes them to arrive late, move slowly, and bunch up with other buses. Further, this part of the City lacks a rapid transit line connecting the Market Street Subway with the neighborhoods along Van Ness Avenue, including Hayes Valley, Pacific Heights, Nob Hill, Russian Hill, and Cow Hollow. BRT along Van Ness Avenue will provide this rapid transit connection.
BRT provides many enhancements to achieve reliable, rapid service. With BRT, your bus is more likely to show up on time because BRT buses operate in a bus-only lane, avoiding car congestion. This means less time waiting at the bus stop. BRT buses also have quicker travel times, so once you’re on the bus, you’ll get to your destination on schedule. The Van Ness BRT corridor will include other improvements to make sure the buses run smoothly, including timing the traffic signals so that buses aren’t stuck at red lights and allowing passengers to board at all doors with proper fare payment. BRT will also sport a more comfortable, rail-like ride, as well as increase pedestrian safety on Van Ness.

Rapid Transit Network for San Francisco
SFTRU’s long-term campaign is to implement a Rapid Transit Network throughout San Francisco. The RTN will be a core system of transit lines that offer the best reliability and quicker trips for transit riders. In particular, SFTRU is advocating improvements to the 17 most heavily used Muni lines (E, J, K, L, M, N, T, 1, 5, 9, 14, 22, 28, 30, 38, 49, 71), which SFMTA has identified as the “Rapid Network” in its Transit Effectiveness Project. This is a bold vision for our City as its population grows. With the implementation of a City-wide Rapid Transit Network, residents and visitors alike will be able to seamlessly navigate San Francisco, and the City will once again be at the cutting edge of public transportation.
